What Self-Awareness Is and Means, and How to Become More Self-Aware

Understanding self-awareness, self-discovery, and self-reflection, what it means to be self-aware, and ideas on how to become more self-aware.

Dear Spirited Earthling,

Mindfulness is a supportive practice for self-awareness, self-discovery, and self-reflection. By cultivating mindfulness, you create the mental space and awareness needed to engage in these processes more effectively. Additionally, self-awareness, self-discovery, and self-reflection can be natural outcomes of a consistent mindfulness practice, as it encourages you to be fully present and attentive to your inner world. All of these practices can contribute to personal growth, improved well-being, and a deeper understanding of yourself.

Self-awareness, self-discovery, and self-reflection are related concepts, but they are not quite the same. They each involve introspection and gaining insights into yourself, but they emphasise different aspects of this process.

What is Self-Awareness?

Self-awareness is the ability to understand your current state of being, including thoughts, emotions, behaviours, values, and motivations. Self-aware individuals have a clear and honest perception of themselves. This awareness enables you to monitor your thoughts and feelings as they occur, which can lead to better self-regulation and decision-making.

Self-awareness is the foundational concept of self-discovery and self-reflection.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” ~ C.G. Jung

What is Self-Discovery?

Self-discovery involves a broader journey of exploring and uncovering different aspects of yourself over time. You may learn new interests, beliefs, values, talents, and motivations with self-discovery. Self-discovery often occurs over time as you engage in different life experiences and learn more about who you are at your core.

Therefore, self-discovery is a broader process that encompasses self-awareness but goes beyond it.

“It is when you lose sight of yourself, that you lose your way. To keep your truth in sight you must keep yourself in sight.” ~ C. JoyBell C

What is Self-Reflection?

Self-reflection involves setting aside time to think deeply about your thoughts, feelings, experiences, and actions. Self-reflection often uses questions, prompts, or structured exercises to guide this process. It's a deliberate effort to gain insights into yourself and your life.

Thus, self-reflection can further develop both self-awareness and self-discovery by facilitating deep thinking and introspection.

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” ~ Aristotle

What it Means to Be Self-Aware

Self-awareness means having a clear and honest perception of yourself. Therefore, being self-aware means:

  • You understand your emotions: You are able to recognise what you are feeling, and why. An example of emotional self-awareness is when you can identify that you’re feeling anxious, understand what triggered it, and be willing to work through it and emotionally regulate.

  • You can empathise: You understand your own emotions and experiences, so you can better understand and empathise with others' emotions and perspectives.

  • You self-reflect: You look inward to examine your thoughts, emotions, and actions to identify and understand the reasons behind them.

  • You know your values and beliefs: Your actions align with your values and beliefs because you know what they are, and are willing to evolve when perspectives are challenged and the new values and beliefs better align with your true self and life goals.

  • You know your behavioural patterns: You can see recurring behaviour patterns and habits (positive and negative), and the reasons why. This awareness can inspire personal growth and behaviour change.

  • You recognise your strengths and weaknesses: You know what you excel in, what needs improvement, and what can be delegated. This means you are able to make better decisions, set realistic goals, and invest in yourself to level up.

  • You can make informed decisions: You are aware of your emotions, behaviours, values, and dreams, so your decisions become more aligned with your authentic self and long-term goals.

  • You are a good communicator: You can express yourself clearly and easily, and are open to feedback from others.

  • You are less stressed and anxious: You know triggers for thought patterns, emotions, and behaviours and can better self-regulate. Managing your emotions means better responses and reactions.

  • You are committed to personal growth:  You recognise areas in your life you want to improve and take the steps needed to grow and evolve.

In summary, self-awareness is about knowing yourself deeply, including your emotions, thoughts, behaviours, values, and beliefs. It's the foundation for self-development, effective communication, and making choices that align with your true self and your life goals.
