5 Ways The 5 am Club Morning Routine Benefits You

The 5 am Morning Routine encourages personal growth, spiritual connection, and builds on knowledge and skills. This morning routine strengthens your mind, body, and soul.

Why Morning Routines are Important

History has shown that people with a daily routine are the most successful (and of course, have innovative ideas, skills, and talents that shaped and shape our world). One of the primary benefits of a morning routine is that you start your day with intention and set the tone of your day. You are making yourself a priority - a form of self-care and self-development.

The routine itself is likely less important than simply having one. Give the 5 am Club a chance and see if it works for you. The concept and guidelines it gives you can be invaluable.

What is the 5 am Club?

The 5 am Club Book: Own Your Morning. Elevate Your Life (written by Robin Sharma) tells the story of a mentor and two mentees who learn of the 5 am Club and begin to reap the benefits of implementing it. One mentee is an on-the-go business woman and the other is an artist who goes where life takes.

The golden hour of 5 am becomes your victory hour and is divided into three 20-minute sections. The 20/20/20 Formula provides time to focus on movement, reflection, and growth.

“Take excellent care of the front end of your day, and the rest of your day will pretty much take care of itself. Own your morning. Elevate your life.” ~ Robin Sharma

How Does the 5 am Club Encourage Self-development?

One of the benefits of the 5 am Club and the 20 / 20 / 20 Formula is that it strengthens four important aspects of personal growth - your 4 internal empires.

20 / 20 / 20: Movement strengthens the body and your healthset.

20 / 20 / 20: Reflection stimulates a wholesome heartset.

20 / 20 / 20: Growth encourages a strong mindset that ensures self-development and professional development.

All of these sets feed in the soulset, where ego is less important than aligning with your spirit.

5 Reasons Why the 5 am Club Morning Routine Benefits You

These are some of the best points of the 5 am Club book as to why having a victory hour is helps you. Here are the benefits of the 5 am morning routine:

1. Routine develops habits. Your habits define your mood. Your mood defines your experience.

The endorphins released with exercising combined with a time of positive reflection lift your mood. A more positive mood and outlook mean more positive experiences.

2. Routine means conscious decisions start your day and are carried throughout it instead of fear and impulse.

The moving minutes of the 20/20/20 formula mean happier hormones/chemicals dictate your day. Conscious decision-making leads to more long-term thinking and goal achievements than spur-of-the-moment decisions. Of course, you will make these decisions but a day determined by them is unfocussed and less productive.

3. Routine affirms conscious decisions, which encourages happiness.

Choosing to work on and improve your different interior empires means you’re becoming a better version of yourself each day. As you learn more, you become more confident. Exercising daily strengthens your body and makes you feel healthier. As you remind yourself of your goals, you will meet them and it’s probably the best way to feel validated.

4. Routine brings a sense of purpose.

A solid morning routine sets you up for success throughout your day. You have a reason to get up each day. You remind yourself of the reasons why you’re doing what you’re doing.

5. Routines become flows.

Before you know it, the morning routine simply becomes the best way to start your day. You flow into it, and after you flow into your day. Habits take time to build, but once they're built, they’re easier to maintain.

“All change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end.” ~ Robin Sharma

3 Easy Tips to Join the 5 am Club Morning Routine

The obvious first step would be to set your alarm for 5 am and get up to work out. This applies to fellow early risers.

But what if you’re not an early riser? What if setting your alarm for 5 am sounds like a terrible idea? Here are 3 ways to get into the 5 am morning routine:

1. Don't think, get up.

The room is nice and dark, and you're tucked in bed. The alarm goes off. You roll over and switch it off and begin to question your judgment for making this seemingly ridiculous decision.

Do not do this! Switch off the alarm and get up. Don’t think about it. No questions. No discussions. Just commitment.

2. Set your alarm earlier and earlier until you're up at 5 am.

When you're standing at the edge of a pool, do you (A) jump in right away, or (B) ease your body into the water?

If you ease into the water, try easing into the morning routine. Set your alarm 30 mins earlier each week until you're waking up at 5 am.

3. Do whatever gets you up and out of bed.

Put your phone by the door, so you literally have to get up to turn it off.

Do this with a buddy, so you are accountable to someone other than yourself. Hire a coach who will be ringing your doorbell at 5 am, or organise paid-for online sessions, so the incentive is greater.

Sleep in your workout clothes, so you can literally get up and do exercise immediately.

“You need to remember that your excuses are seducers, your fears are liars and your doubts are thieves.” ~ Robin Sharma

How Long Does it Take Until Waking Up at 5 am Becomes Easier?

In the 5 am Club book, Sharma explains that a habit takes 66 days to form and stick.

  • Your first 20 days are the destruction of the old habits (in this case, not waking up at 5 am).

  • Your second 20 days are the renovation of your habits and laying the foundations for a new habit (in this case, waking up at 5 am). This phase is difficult and most likely when you'll really want to quit.

  • Your last 20 days are the integration of your new habit in your life. It's when your automaticity forms and getting up at this time becomes easier and the norm.

The other 6 days are kind of like your buffer days, when one of the phases may take a bit longer than 20 days. Forming a habit takes willpower. Give yourself 66 days to get into a morning routine.

"High victory is made in those early morning hours when no one's watching and while everyone else is sleeping." ~ Robin Sharma

Will you join the 5 am Club?

Having a morning routine doesn’t mean your routine for the rest of the day can’t be having an un-routine routine. Remember, ‘being busy’ doesn't equal being productive. What having a morning routine means is: you’ll be happier, more positive, and make better decisions for your present self and your future self.

It will be hard at first. Push through the tiredness and soreness, and develop the habits. Give yourself 66 days. Adopting routines like the 5 am Club is a form of self-care because it’s an hour of your time dedicated to yourself.

Does the 20/20/20 formula from the 5 am club really work? Yes, because it encourages personal growth and carves out time for you to connect with yourself each day.

"Everyone dreams of being a legend until it comes time to do the work that legends do." ~ Robin Sharma
